This story is the second place I have read that actinic keratosis is pre-cancer to Squamous Cell Carcinoma, specifically. I had thought that AK’s could turn into Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) as well as SCC, but this article suggests otherwise.

hi, just read your blogs too, Ive started Efudix and am now really really scared after looking at your pics. how long till your sores went completely? Im on 2 weeks holidays from work and dont think I can face going back if I have to look like a cooked lobster.

Tanya, to be honest, recovery was slow. It took over a month after stopping the treatments, before I was 95% clear. Some evidence of the treatment remained for at least two months before it was completely healed.

Hi Fritz, I am on day 26 of Efudix on my entire face. I have found your website a wonderful benchmark for the pain and unsightliness I have been through. The reaction you had on your forehead is similar to what I had on my chin. I am just at the stage where I can make a bit of a smile without bringing pain to my face. My skin is very sore and tingles all the time. Thanks for being so diligent and and honest in your recordings. They helped me realise that there was a light at the end of this itchy, painful and tortuous tunnel.

DO YOU THINK ALL THE PAIN, ITCHING AND TIME ALSO HAS TO DO WITH THE AMOUNT OF SKIN BEING TREATED? I HAD A SMALL AK ON MY CHEEK AND WITH A Q-TIP, APPLIED IT TOA QUARTER SIZED CIRCLE FOR 10 DAYS. ON THE 11TH DAY, IT CRUSTED OVER AND AFTER 7 DAYS, IT WAS BARELY PINK! NO ITCHING OR PAIN WHATSOEVER. I HAVE A FEW MORE AND WANTED TO TREAT MY ENTIRE FACE, BUT AFTER SEEING THE PHOTOS, I DON’T KNOW. I’M AN INTERIOR DESIGNER WHICH REQUIRES BEING UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL! MAYBE IF I TAKE 8 WEEKS OFF OF WORK.
THANKS FOR YOUR PHOTOS AND INSIGHT,
DENYSE

Is it worth it? I have not yet begun the treatment but my dermtologist has remommended it.
Is it easier to have it done than doing it yourself?

My dermatolagist has just recommended that I start this efudex treatment to my entire face. He says its three weeks of treatment and one week of healing. After looking at all these pics and info. I’m petrified of the stuff. I have had a few areas treated in the past, small patches which were unsightly but not itchy, burning or uncomfortable. After looking at some pictures here, i’m terrified to use this stuff on my whole face. Although I don’t want this BCC to get any worse, I’m beside myself with what to do.
